A note from our President

Greetings,
Midway through my year as President of Columbia Rotary South, I must say "Thank you" to all in the Club for your tireless efforts in coordinating our many service projects throughout the Columbia community. The participation of every club member truly makes my role enjoyable and reminds me of Rotary International's commitment to service, our club definitely hits the mark.

I do want to take this opportunity to remind the Club membership about a few of our guest speaker guidelines. Columbia Rotary South has strived to provide diverse, enriching programs week after week drawing on the resources in our community including our public servants in office, as appropriate. We have, as a rule, steered away from active political campaigns, political topics and other "charged" issues with active competing interests. From time to time, we do have a speaker that happens to be seeking some form of public office and ask that they stay to their presentation topic and not detour into their political agenda. We are all human, however, and slips may occur. Please bear with us in these instances and know that your Programming committee is working their hardest to deliver a variety of programs each Friday.

I welcome any comments you may have and the board will certainly take them into consideration as we continue to plan our future.

Group Study Exchange, by Ron Kelley

The Columbia Rotary Clubs will be hosting a Group Study Exchange group from South Korea March 27th – April 1st. The team includes five individuals. We need hosts for each of the team members. We need one family from Rotary South to host one of the team members during their stay in Columbia. The host will be responsible for housing the team member and feeding the individual and provide transportation to Rotary functions during their stay in Columbia. This is a great way to learn about another culture and share our culture. If you are interested please let Ron Kelley know. He can be reached at 289-5822 or via e-mail at kelleyr@missouri.edu.

Career Day Help, by Michelle Baumstark

Hi everyone! I have a request for speakers for Career Day at the middle schools. Here are the Schools that I still need speakers for...

Gentry Middle School on Feb. 11
Noon to 1:30 p.m. - 4 openings
1:30 to 3:00 p.m. - 1 openings

Lange Middle School on Feb. 18
8:50 to 10:20 a.m. - 6 openings
10:30 to noon - 1 openings
1:30 to 3:00 p.m. - 8 openings

Thank you! Career day is an opportunity for our 7th grade students to hear about the world of work. It is one of their first exposures to career paths. Each opening includes 2 twenty-minute presentations to different classes of students. Each volunteer is paired with another speaker to fill one class period. The basics of the presentation include an introduction about who you are, what you do, who you work for etc. Then highlight the skills needed, education needed, typical income and some situations you may encounter on the job. Finally, what can students do to prepare for a job in your field.

Volunteers can contact me with any questions.

Thank you!

This academy is a 3 ½ day program that includes an introduction to Rotary’s “Service Above Self”, along with youth programs, team activities, leadership skills training and personality self-assessment. The students are nominated and encouraged to apply through recommendations of Rotarians and high school faculty & administrators. It is preferred that they are either incoming or outgoing high school sophomores. Rotary needs the student’s applications by March 1st. I am asking any of our Rotary members that know a young person, whether it be a son, daughter, grandchild, neighbor etc… that they would like to nominate, please forward their name and address to Brian Harrison, RYLA Committee Chair, at his email address: b.harrison@harrisonagencyinc.com

Miscellaneous Items

1) KMOS-TV's "Kids Day": I'm passing along this inquiry from Louise Beasley about KMOS-TV's "Kids Day" which will be held on June 19th in Columbia. Please see the attached flyer for additional information. There is an informational meeting on Feb.10th. This appears to be an activity in which many of our Rotarians would have an interest (family, kids, literacy, etc.). We need some volunteers for the attached. Any chance the Rotary's in Columbia could help us out?

World Community Service - International Project Visit Opportunity

To: Club Presidents - District 6080
From: Paul Reinert - District 6080 World Community Service Chair
Subject: International Travel Opportunity - Ecuador

Several Rotary Clubs in our District have joined with District 6080, the Rotary Club Chillos Milenio in Quito, Ecuador and District 4400 on a project to fund needed equipment and infrastructure improvements at the Yachana Technical High School located in the Amazon region of Eastern Ecuador. I have visited the area and am very familiar with the Yachana Foundation, its high school, and its other services to the people of this remote region. I will lead a trip to visit Ecuador and the Yachana Lodge from April 1 - April 8 and welcome up to 12 Rotarians and guests to join me on this trip. We will be hosted by Douglas McMeekin, the founder and Executive Director of the Yachana Foundation who also is a close personal friend of mine. The details of the trip are included in the attached document. I have made presentations on my experiences in Ecuador to several of our district clubs and would welcome the opportunity to answer any questions that members may have concerning our project, the Foundation or our trip. I promise an exciting and safe adventure for those interested at a reasonable cost.

Best Rotarian regards,

Paul Reinert
